Ian Jackson 44ea68c6e6 libxl: Record backend/frontend paths in /libxl/$DOMID
This gives us a record of all the backends we have set up for a
domain, which is separate from the frontends in
  /local/domain/$DOMID/device.

In particular:

1. A guest has write permission for the frontend path:
  /local/domain/$DOMID/device/$KIND/$DEVID
which means that the guest can completely delete the frontend.
(They can't recreate it because they don't have write permission
on the containing directory.)

2. A guest has write permission for the backend path recorded in the
frontend, ie, it can write to
  /local/domain/$DOMID/device/$KIND/$DEVID/backend
which means that the guest can break the association between
frontend and backend.

So we can't rely on iterating over the frontends to find all the
backends, or examining a frontend to discover how a device is
configured.

So, have libxl__device_generic_add record the frontend and backend
paths in /libxl/$DOMID/device, and have libxl__device_destroy remove
them again.

Create the containing directory /libxl/GUEST/device in
libxl__domain_make. The already existing xs_rm in devices_destroy_cb
will take care of removing it.

This is part of XSA-175.

Backport note: Backported over 7472ced, which fixes a bug in driver
domain teardown.

Jan Beulich 6f41b482b9 x86: enforce consistent cachability of MMIO mappings
We've been told by Intel that inconsistent cachability between
multiple mappings of the same page can affect system stability only
when the affected page is an MMIO one. Since the stale data issue is
of no relevance to the hypervisor (since all guest memory accesses go
through proper accessors and validation), handling of RAM pages
remains unchanged here. Any MMIO mapped by domains however needs to be
done consistently (all cachable mappings or all uncachable ones), in
order to avoid Machine Check exceptions. Since converting existing
cachable mappings to uncachable (at the time an uncachable mapping
gets established) would in the PV case require tracking all mappings,
allow MMIO to only get mapped uncachable (UC, UC-, or WC).

This also implies that in the PV case we mustn't use the L1 PTE update
fast path when cachability flags get altered.

Since in the HVM case at least for now we want to continue honoring
pinned cachability attributes for pages not mapped by the hypervisor,
special case handling of r/o MMIO pages (forcing UC) gets added there.
Arguably the counterpart change to p2m-pt.c may not be necessary, since
UC- (which already gets enforced there) is probably strict enough.

Note that the shadow code changes include fixing the write protection
of r/o MMIO ranges: shadow_l1e_remove_flags() and its siblings, other
than l1e_remove_flags() and alike, return the new PTE (and hence
ignoring their return values makes them no-ops).

This is CVE-2016-2270 / XSA-154.

Jan Beulich 3278c1d066 memory: split and tighten maximum order permitted in memops
Introduce and enforce separate limits for ordinary DomU, DomU with
pass-through device(s), control domain, and hardware domain.

The DomU defaults were determined based on what so far was allowed by
multipage_allocation_permitted().

The x86 hwdom default was chosen based on linux-2.6.18-xen.hg c/s
1102:82782f1361a9 indicating 2Mb is not enough, plus some slack.

The ARM hwdom default was chosen to allow 2Mb (order-9) mappings, plus
a little bit of slack.

Ian Campbell f558eb43bf docs: workaround markdown parser error in xen-command-line.markdown
Some versions of markdown (specifically the one in Debian Wheezy, currently
used to generate
http://xenbits.xen.org/docs/unstable/misc/xen-command-line.html) seem to be
confused by nested lists in the middle of multi-paragraph parent list entries
as seen in the com1,com2 entry.

The effect is that the "Default" section of all following entries are replace
by some sort of hash or checksum (at least, a string of 32 random seeming hex
digits).

Workaround this issue by making the decriptions of the DPS options a nested
list, moving the existing nested list describing the options for S into a third
level list. This seems to avoid the issue, and is arguably better formatting in
its own right (at least its not a regression IMHO)

George Dunlap 5479961ab5 libxl: Remove qxl support for the 4.3 release
The qxl drivers for Windows and Linux end up calling instructions
that cannot be used for MMIO at the moment. Just for the 4.3 release,
remove qxl support.

This patch should be reverted as soon as the 4.4 development window opens.

The issue in question:

(XEN) emulate.c:88:d18 bad mmio size 16
(XEN) io.c:201:d18 MMIO emulation failed @ 0033:7fd2de390430: f3 0f 6f
19 41 83 e8 403

The instruction in question is "movdqu (%rcx),%xmm3". Xen knows how
to emulate it, but unfortunately %xmm3 is 16 bytes long, and the interface
between Xen and qemu at the moment would appear to only allow MMIO accesses
of 8 bytes.

It's too late in the release cycle to find a fix or a workaround.

Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk 65a11256f2 xl: Fix 'free_memory' to include outstanding_claims value.
Updating to make it clear that free_memory reported by 'xl info'
is influenced by the outstanding claim value. That is the free
memory that will be available to the host once all outstanding
claims have been completed. This modifies the behavior that the
patch titled "xl: 'xl info' print outstanding claims if enabled
(claim_mode=1 in xl.conf)" had - which reported the
outstanding claims and nothing else.

The free_pages as reported by the hypervisor is the currently
available count of pages on the heap. The outstanding pages is
the total amount of pages reserved for guests (so not taken from
the heap yet). As guests are being populated the memory from the
heap shrinks and the outstanding count of pages decreases.
The total memory used for guests increases.

As the available count of pages on the heap and outstanding
claims are intertwined, report the amount of free memory available
to be a combination of that. That is free heap memory minus the
outstanding pages.

We also make some odd choices in reporting. By default we will
only display 'outstanding_claims' if the claim_mode is enabled
in the global configuration file. However, if there are outstanding
claims, we will ignore the claim_mode and report these values.

Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk eb42f98a20 xl: 'xl claims' print outstanding per domain claims
This is similar to "xl: 'xl info' print outstanding claims if enabled
(claim_mode=1 in xl.conf)" which exposes the global claim value.

This patch provides the value of the currently outstanding pages
claimed for each domains. This is per domain value which is added
to the global claim value which influences the hypervisors' MM system.

When a claim call is done, a reservation for a specific amount of pages
is set (and this patch lists said number) and also a global value is
incremented. This global value is then reduced as the domain's memory
is populated and eventually reaches zero.

The toolstack (libxc) also sets the domain's claim to zero when the population
of memory has completed as an extra step. Any call to destroy the domain
will also set the domain's claim to zero.

If the reservation cannot be meet the guest creation fails immediately
instead of taking seconds or minutes (depending on the size of the guest)
while the toolstack populates memory.

See patch: "xl: Implement XENMEM_claim_pages support via 'claim_mode'
global config" for details on how it is implemented.

The value fluctuates quite often so the value is stale once it is provided
to the user-space. However it is useful for diagnostic purposes.

It is printed irregardless of global "claim_mode" option in xl.conf(5).
That is b/c the user might have enabled, launched a guest, and then
disabled the option - and we should still report the correct outstanding
claim value. The 'man xl' shows the details of this argument.
The output is close to what 'xl list' looks like:

Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk 8f28de1ec0 xl: 'xl info' print outstanding claims if enabled (claim_mode=1 in xl.conf)
This patch provides the value of the currently outstanding pages
claimed for all domains. This is a total global value that influences
the hypervisors' MM system.

When a claim call is done, a reservation for a specific amount of pages
is set and also a global value is incremented. This global value is then
reduced as the domain's memory is populated and eventually reaches zero.

It is only printed when the global "claim_mode" option in xl.conf(5)
is set to enabled (1). The 'man xl' shows the details of this item.

Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk ad0fcc9fe5 xl: Implement XENMEM_claim_pages support via 'claim_mode' global config
The XENMEM_claim_pages hypercall operates per domain and it should be
used system wide. As such this patch introduces a global configuration
option 'claim_mode' that by default is disabled.

If this option is enabled then when a guest is created there will be an
guarantee that there is memory available for the guest. This is an
particularly acute problem on hosts with memory over-provisioned guests
that use tmem and have self-balloon enabled (which is the default option
for them). The self-balloon mechanism can deflate/inflate the balloon
quickly and the amount of free memory (which 'xl info' can show) is stale
the moment it is printed. When claim is enabled a reservation for the
amount of memory ('memory' in guest config) is set, which is then reduced
as the domain's memory is populated and eventually reaches zero.

If the reservation cannot be meet the guest creation fails immediately
instead of taking seconds/minutes (depending on the size of the guest)
while the guest is populated.

Note that to enable tmem type guests, one needs to provide 'tmem' on the
Xen hypervisor argument and as well on the Linux kernel command line.

There are two boolean options:

(0) No claim is made. Memory population during guest creation will be
attempted as normal and may fail due to memory exhaustion.

(1) Normal memory and freeable pool of ephemeral pages (tmem) is used when
calculating whether there is enough memory free to launch a guest.
This guarantees immediate feedback whether the guest can be launched due
to memory exhaustion (which can take a long time to find out if launching
massively huge guests) and in parallel.

[v1: Removed own claim_mode type, using just bool, improved docs, all per
Ian's suggestion]

Ian Campbell 13d68fab40 tools+stubdom: install under /usr/local by default.
Now that the hotplug scripts have been fixed to remove hardcoded paths lets
try this again. From 26470:acaf29203cf9:

This is the defacto (or FHS mandated?) standard location for software
built from source, in order to avoid clashing with packaged software
which is installed under /usr/bin etc.

I think there is benefit in having Xen's install behave more like the
majority of other OSS software out there.

The major downside here is in the transition from 4.2 to 4.3 where
people who have built from source will innevitably discover breakage
because 4.3 no longer overwrites stuff in /usr like it used to so they
pickup old stale bits from /usr instead of new stuff from /usr/local.

Packages will use ./configure --prefix=/usr or whatever helper macro
their package manager gives them. I have confirmed that doing this
results in the same list of installed files as before this patch was
	applied.

The hypervisor remains in /boot/ and there is no intention to move it.

Allow the "usbdevice" key to accept a list of USB devices, and pass
them in using the new usbdevice_list domain build element.

For backwards compatibility, still accept singleton values.

Also update the xl.cfg manpage, adding information about how to pass
through host devices.

as applied:
 - Fix trailing whitespace and wrap some lines in xl_cmdimpl.c -iwj

autoballoon=1 is not recommened if dom0_mem was used to reduce the
amount of dom0 memory. Instead of requiring users to change xl.conf
if they do this, extend the autoballoon option with a new choice:
"auto".

With autoballoon="auto", autoballooning will be disabled if dom0_mem
was used on the Xen command line.

For consistency, accept "on" and "off" as valid autoballoon options (1
and 0 are still accepted).

The default remains "on" for now.
