A 'channel':
- is a low-bandwidth private communication channel that resembles
a physical serial port.
- is implemented as a PV console with a well-known string name
which is used to hook the channel to the appropriate software
in the guest (i.e. some kind of guest agent).
- has a backend 'connection' which describes what should happen
to the data.
The following 'connection' types are defined:
* PTY: the I/O surfaces as a pty in the backend domain
* SOCKET: a listening Unix domain socket accepts a connection in
the backend domain and proxies
Channels may be listed but don't currently support hotplug/unplug.

The lock introduced in d2cd9d4f ("libxl: functions to lock / unlock
libxl userdata store") has a bug that can leak the lock file when domain
destruction races with other functions that try to get hold of the lock.
There are several issues:
1. The lock is released too early with libxl__userdata_destroyall
deletes everything in userdata store, including the lock file.
2. The check of domain existence is only done at the beginning of lock
function, by the time the lock is acquired, the domain might have
been gone already.
The effect of this two issues is we can run into such situation:
Process 1 Process 2 domain destruction
# LOCK FUNCTION # LOCK FUNCTION
check domain existence check domain existence
acquire lock (file created)
# LOCK FUNCTION
destroy all files (lock file deleted,
lock released)
acquire lock (file created)
# LOCK FUNCTION destroy domain
# UNLOCK (close fd only)
[ lock file leaked ]
Fix this problem by deploying following changes:
1. Unlink lock file in unlock function.
2. Modify libxl__userdata_destroyall to not delete domain-userdata-lock,
so that the lock remains held until unlock function is called.
3. Check domain still exists when the lock is acquired, unlock if
domain is already gone.

This commit changes the existing libxl code to be sure to grant access
permission to PCI-related I/O memory ranges, while setting up passthrough
of PCI devices specified in the domain's configuration, and to VGA-related
memory ranges, while setting up VGA passthrough (if gfx_passthru = 1 in
the domain's configuration).
As for the latter, the newly-added code does not replace any existing one,
but instead matches the calls to xc_domain_memory_mapping() performed by
QEMU on the path that is executed if gfx passthru is enabled and follows
the registration of a new VGA controller (in register_vga_regions(),
defined in hw/pt-graphics.c). In fact, VGA needs some extra memory
ranges to be mapped with respect to PCI; QEMU expects that access to those
memory ranges is implicitly granted when he calls the hypervisor with the
function xc_domain_memory_mapping(): this commit calls iomem_permission
for it when needed by checking the passthru PCI device's class.
NOTE: the code added by this commit still does not verify if the passthru
of the framebuffer area is being performed for the primary GPU, but
only replicates the behavior of QEMU which is limited to performing
the passthru for all PCI devices of VGA class.
This commit is instrumental to the last one in the series, which will
separate the functions of the iomem_permission and memory_mapping DOMCTLs,
so that requesting an I/O-memory range will not imply that access to such
a range is implicitly granted.

template to reconstruct domain configuration during runtime.
There's only one write to disk when domain creation finishes. We
therefore have a window that the domain exists but has no JSON config in
disk. We define this state as domain being created or destroyed. Any
other operations that need to access JSON config should bail.

To do so, we add the vcpu_soft_affinity array to build_info, and
treat it much like vcpu_hard_affinity. The new config option is
called "cpus_soft".
Note that the vcpu_hard_affinity array, introduced in a previous
patch, and the vcpu_soft_affinity array, introduced here, share
the same LIBXL_HAVE_xxx macro, in libxl.h. That is called
LIBXL_HAVE_BUILDINFO_VCPU_AFFINITY_ARRAYS, and was introduced
together with vcpu_hard_affinity, but only inside a comment.
In this change, we uncomment, and hence properly define it.
In order to avoid having to issue separate calls to
libxl_set_vcpuaffinity() (one for hard affinity and one for soft
affinity) in libxl__build_pre(), in case the caller uses
b_info->cpumap (for the former) and b_info->vcpu_soft_affinity (for
the latter), we also set (again!) a new default for b_info->cpumap.
This allows, from this change on, to always and only deal with
b_info->vcpu_hard_affinity all around libxl internals.

the code in anticipation of introducing something simpler that
conforms to the current specification from Microsoft.
Switch to using a HVM param (HVM_PARAM_VM_GENERATION_ID_ADDR) instead

save/restore since it only needs to transfer the value of this param.

by avoiding allocating them in libxl__domain_build_info_setdefault.
In fact, back in 7e449837 ("libxl: provide _init and _setdefault for
libxl_domain_build_info") and a5d30c23 ("libxl: allow for explicitly
specifying node-affinity"), it was decided that the default for these
fields was for them to be allocated and filled.
That is now causing problem, whenever we have to figure out whether
the caller is using or not one of those fields. In fact, when we see
a full bitmap, is it just the default value, or is the user that
wants it that way?
Since that kind of knowledge has become important, change the default
to be "bitmap not allocated". It then becomes easy to know whether a
libxl caller is using one of the fields, just by checking whether the
bitmap is actually there with a non-zero size.
This is very important for the following patches introducing new ways
of specifying hard and soft affinity. It also allows us to improve
the checks around NUMA automatic placement, during domain creation
(and that bit is done in this very patch).

This patch pushes parsing of "init_seclabel", "seclabel",
"device_model_stubdomain_seclabel" and "pool" down to libxl level.
Originally the parsing is done in xl level, which is not ideal because
libxl won't have the truely relevant information. With this patch libxl
holds important information by itself.
The libxl IDL is extended to hold the string of labels and pool name.
And if there those strings are present they take precedence over the
numeric representations.
As all relevant structures (libxl_dominfo etc) have a field called
X_name / X_label now, a string is also copied there so that callers
won't have to do ID to name / label translation.
In order to be compatible with users of older versions of libxl, this
patch also defines LIBXL_HAVE_SSID_LABEL and LIBXL_HAVE_CPUPOOL_NAME. If
they are defined, the respective strings are available. And if those
strings are not NULL, libxl will do the parsing and ignore the numeric
values.

This will change initiate_domain_create to walk through NIC definitions
and automatically assign devids to those which have not assigned one.
The devids are needed later in domcreate_launch_dm (for HVM domains
using emulated NICs). The command string for starting the device-model
has those ids as part of its arguments.
Assignment of devids in the hotplug case is handled by libxl_device_nic_add
but that would be called too late in the startup case.
I also moved the call to libxl__device_nic_setdefault here as this seems
to be the only path leading there and avoids doing the loop a third time.
The two loops are trying to handle a case where the caller sets some devids
(not sure that should be valid) but leaves some unset.

Commit 00a4b65f85 Sep 7 2010
"libxc: provide notification of final checkpoint to restore end"
broke migration from any version of Xen using tools from prior to that commit
Older tools have no idea about an XC_SAVE_ID_LAST_CHECKPOINT, causing newer
tools xc_domain_restore() to start reading the qemu save record, as
ctx->last_checkpoint is 0.
The failure looks like:
xc: error: Max batch size exceeded (1970103633). Giving up.
where 1970103633 = 0x756d6551 = *(uint32_t*)"Qemu"
With this fix in place, the behaviour for normal migrations is reverted to how
it was before the regression; the migration is considered non-checkpointed
right from the start. A XC_SAVE_ID_LAST_CHECKPOINT chunk seen in the
migration stream is a nop. For checkpointed migrations the behaviour is
unchanged.

The XENMEM_claim_pages hypercall operates per domain and it should be
used system wide. As such this patch introduces a global configuration
option 'claim_mode' that by default is disabled.
If this option is enabled then when a guest is created there will be an
guarantee that there is memory available for the guest. This is an
particularly acute problem on hosts with memory over-provisioned guests
that use tmem and have self-balloon enabled (which is the default option
for them). The self-balloon mechanism can deflate/inflate the balloon
quickly and the amount of free memory (which 'xl info' can show) is stale
the moment it is printed. When claim is enabled a reservation for the
amount of memory ('memory' in guest config) is set, which is then reduced
as the domain's memory is populated and eventually reaches zero.
If the reservation cannot be meet the guest creation fails immediately
instead of taking seconds/minutes (depending on the size of the guest)
while the guest is populated.
Note that to enable tmem type guests, one needs to provide 'tmem' on the
Xen hypervisor argument and as well on the Linux kernel command line.
There are two boolean options:
(0) No claim is made. Memory population during guest creation will be
attempted as normal and may fail due to memory exhaustion.
(1) Normal memory and freeable pool of ephemeral pages (tmem) is used when
calculating whether there is enough memory free to launch a guest.
This guarantees immediate feedback whether the guest can be launched due
to memory exhaustion (which can take a long time to find out if launching
massively huge guests) and in parallel.

Allow a domain to be built under one security label and run using a
different label. This can be used to prevent the domain builder or
control domain from having the ability to access a guest domain's memory
via map_foreign_range except during the build process where this is
required.
Example domain configuration snippet:
seclabel='customer_1:vm_r:nomigrate_t'
init_seclabel='customer_1:vm_r:nomigrate_t_building'
Note: this does not provide complete protection from a malicious dom0;
mappings created during the build process may persist after the relabel,
and could be used to indirectly access the guest's memory. However, if
dom0 correctly unmaps the domain upon building, a the domU is protected
against dom0 becoming malicious in the future.

Don't have a fixed number of devices in the aodevs array, and instead
size it depending on the devices present in xenstore. Somewhat
formalise the multiple device addition/removal machinery to make this
clearer and easier to do.
As a side-effect we fix a few "lost thread of control" bug which would
occur if there were no devices of a particular kind. (Various if
statements which checked for there being no devices have become
redundant, but are retained to avoid making the patch bigger.)
Specifically:
* Users of libxl__ao_devices are no longer expected to know in
advance how many device operations they are going to do. Instead
they can initiate them one at a time, between bracketing calls to
"begin" and "prepared".
* The array of aodevs used for this is dynamically sized; to support
this it's an array of pointers rather than of structs.
* Users of libxl__ao_devices are presented with a more opaque interface.
They are are no longer expected to, themselves,
- look into the array of aodevs (this is now private)
- know that the individual addition/removal completions are
handled by libxl__ao_devices_callback (this callback function
is now a private function for the multidev machinery)
- ever deal with populating the contents of an aodevs
* The doc comments relating to some of the members of
libxl__ao_device are clarified. (And the member `aodevs' is moved
to put it with the other members with the same status.)
* The multidev machinery allocates an aodev to represent the
operation of preparing all of the other operations. See
the comment in libxl__multidev_begin.
A wrinkle is that the functions are called "multidev" but the structs
are called "libxl__ao_devices" and "aodevs". I have given these
functions this name to distinguish them from "libxl__ao_device" and
"aodev" and so forth by more than just the use of the plural "s"
suffix.
In the next patch we will rename the structs.
