Andrew Cooper de16a8fa0d x86: Use LOCK ADD instead of MFENCE for smp_mb()
MFENCE is overly heavyweight for SMP semantics on WB memory, because it also
orders weaker cached writes, and flushes the WC buffers.

This technique was used as an optimisation in Java[1], and later adopted by
Linux[2] where it was measured to have a 60% performance improvement in VirtIO
benchmarks.

The stack is used because it is hot in the L1 cache, and a -4 offset is used
to avoid creating a false data dependency on live data.

For 64bit userspace, the Red Zone needs to be considered. Use -32 to allow
for a reasonable quantity of Red Zone data, but still have a 50% chance of
hitting the same cache line as %rsp.

Fix up the 32 bit definitions in HVMLoader and libxc to avoid a false data
dependency.

Andrew Cooper baa4d064e9 tools: Delete XEN_DOMCTL_disable_migrate
It is conceptually wrong for this information to exist in the hypervisor in
the first place. Only the toolstack is capable of correctly reasoning about
the non-migrateability of guests.

This hypercall has only ever existed to control the visibility of the
Invariant TSC flag to the guest. Now that we have properly disentanged that
and moved ITSC into the guests CPUID policy, delete this hypercall.

Furthermore, this fixes a corner case where Xen would override the toolstacks
choice of ITSC for a xenstore stubdomain. That said, init-xenstore-domain
doesn't currently ask for ITSC, and MiniOS doesn't know what ITSC is either,
so nothing actually changes in practice.

Andrew Cooper 6c5fb129e8 tools/cpuid: Untangle Invariant TSC handling
ITSC being visible to the guest is currently implicit with the toolstack
unconditionally asking for it, and Xen clipping it based on the vTSC and/or
XEN_DOMCTL_disable_migrate settings.

This is problematic for several reasons.

First, the implicit vTSC behaviour manifests as a real bug on migration to a
host with a different frequency, with ITSC but without TSC scaling
capabilities, whereby the ITSC feature becomes advertised to the guest. ITSC
will disappear again if the guest migrates to server with the same frequency
as the original, or to one with TSC scaling support.

Secondly, disallowing ITSC unless the guest doesn't migrate is conceptually
wrong. It is common to have migration pools of identical hardware, at which
point the TSC frequency is nominally the same, and more modern hardware has
TSC scaling support anyway. In both cases, it is safe to advertise ITSC and
migrate the guest.

Remove all implicit logic in Xen, and make ITSC part of the max CPUID policies
for guests. Plumb an itsc parameter into xc_cpuid_apply_policy() and have
libxl__cpuid_legacy() fill in the two cases where it can reasonably expect
ITSC to be safe for the guest to see. This retains the current side effect of
enabling ITSC if the guest is marked as nomigrate.

This is a behaviour change for TSC_MODE_NATIVE, where the ITSC will now
reliably not appear, and for the case where the user explicitly requests ITSC,
in which case it will appear even if the guest isn't marked as nomigrate.

Juergen Gross 52dbd6f07c tools: generate pkg-config files from make variables
For each library built two variants of pkg-config files are created
from a per-library template: an "official" one for installation on
the user's system, and one used for building internal tools, like e.g.
qemu.

Instead of the template which is looking very similar for all libraries
generate the pkg-config files directly from make variables.

This will reduce the need to specify some pkg-config file entries in
the templates, as the contents can easily be generated from available
data (e.g. "Version:" and "Requires.private:" entries).

Especially the variant used for building internal tools needs to gain
additional runtime link parameters for the internally used libraries,
as otherwise those won't be found by the users (e.g. qemu).

Juergen Gross d400dc5729 tools: tweak tools/libs/libs.mk for being able to support libxenctrl
tools/libs/libs.mk needs to be modified for being able to support
building libxenctrl, as the pkg-config file of that library is not
following the same conventions as those of the other libraries.

So add support for specifying PKG_CONFIG before including libs.mk.

In order to make life easier for unstable libraries like libxenctrl
set MAJOR and MINOR automatically to the Xen-version and 0 when not
specified. This removes the need to bump the versions of unstable
libraries when switching to a new Xen version.

As all libraries built via libs.mk require a map file generate a dummy
one in case there is none existing. This again will help avoiding the
need to bump the libarary version in the map file of an unstable
library in case it is exporting all symbols.

The clean target is missing the removal of _paths.h.

Finally drop the foreach loop when setting PKG_CONFIG_LOCAL, as there
is always only one element in PKG_CONFIG.

Juergen Gross ded08cdfa7 tools: generate most contents of library make variables
Library related make variables (CFLAGS_lib*, SHDEPS_lib*, LDLIBS_lib*
and SHLIB_lib*) mostly have a common pattern for their values. Generate
most of this content automatically by adding a new per-library variable
defining on which other libraries a lib is depending. Those definitions
are put into an own file in order to make it possible to include it
from various Makefiles, especially for stubdom.

This in turn makes it possible to drop the USELIB variable from each
library Makefile.

The LIBNAME variable can be dropped, too, as it can be derived from the
directory name the library is residing in.

Juergen Gross bc44e2fb31 tools: add a copy of library headers in tools/include
The headers.chk target in tools/Rules.mk tries to compile all headers
stand alone for testing them not to include any internal header.

Unfortunately the headers tested against are not complete, as any
header for a Xen library is not included in the include path of the
test compile run, resulting in a failure in case any of the tested
headers in including an official Xen library header.

Fix that by copying the official headers located in
tools/libs/*/include to tools/include.

In order to support libraries with header name other than xen<lib>.h
or with multiple headers add a LIBHEADER make variable a lib specific
Makefile can set in that case.

Move the headers.chk target from Rules.mk to libs.mk as it is used
for libraries in tools/libs only.

Like %cr2 for pagefaults, %dr6 contains ancillary information for debug

For xendevicemodel_inject_event(), no ABI change is needed (although an API
one would be ideal). Switch from 'cr2' to 'extra' in variable names which
don't constitute an API change, and update the documentation to match.

For the monitor interface, vm_event_debug needs extending with a pending_dbg
field. This shall behave like the VT-x PENDING_DBG control. Extend
hvm_monitor_debug() and for now, always pass in 0 - this will be fixed
eventually, when other hypervisor bugfixes are complete.

While modifying hvm_monitor_debug(), take the opportunity to correct trap type
and instruction length from unsigned long to unsigned int, as they are both
tiny values.

Finally, adjust xen-access.c to the new expectations. Introspection tools
intercepting debug exceptions should mirror the new pending_dbg field into
xendevicemodel_inject_event() for %dr6 to be processed correctly for the

  make[7]: *** [headers.chk] Error 1

The problem is that xentoolcore_internal.h includes _xentoolcore_list.h which
hasn't been generated yet.

The toolcore headers.chk rule (unlike the other libraries) had an additional
dependency against $(AUTOINCS), which forced the headers to be generated
first. Replicate this in the common libs.mk

Roger Pau Monne 1e12872d29 libs/gnttab: add missing FreeBSD functions
The FreeBSD implementation is missing the following functions:

osdep_gnttab_dmabuf_exp_from_refs
osdep_gnttab_dmabuf_exp_wait_released
osdep_gnttab_dmabuf_imp_to_refs
osdep_gnttab_dmabuf_imp_release

Which all deal with dmabufs, that only exists on Linux. Implement them
using abort, since such functions should never be called on FreeBSD.

FTR, I realized those functions where missing when attempting to use
pygrub:

Paul Durrant b49ef5d39d xenforeignmemory: work around bug in older privcmd
Versions of linux privcmd prior to commit dc9eab6fd94d ("return -ENOTTY
for unimplemented IOCTLs") will return -EINVAL rather than the conventional
-ENOTTY for unimplemented codes. This breaks the error path in
libxenforeignmemory resource mapping, which only translates ENOTTY into
EOPNOTSUPP to inform callers of the need to use an alternative (legacy)
mechanism.

This patch adds a new 'unimplemented' [1] ioctl code into the local
privcmd header which is then used to probe for the appropriate errno to
translate in the resource mapping error path

[1] this is a code that has, so far, never been used in any version of
privcmd and will be added to future versions of the header in the
linux source, to make sure it stays unimplemented.

Juergen Gross f5d10dc290 tools/libxencall: enforce proper alignment of hypercall buffers
xencall_alloc_buffer() is used throughout Xen tools for allocating
hypercall buffers. Allocation is done at page granularity. For simple
administration each allocated set of pages contains a small header
holding the number of pages of that set. The hypercall buffer is
located directly after the 4 byte sized header, leading to a wrong
alignment for e.g. pointers.

Repair that by using a 16 byte sized header enforcing the same
alignment as malloc().

For libxencall.map, the hunk as presented would have been ok, if Xen 4.11
