Wei Liu 5c883cf036 tools: remove blktap2 related code and documentation
Blktap2 is effectively dead for a few years.

Notable changes in this patch:

0. Unhook blktap2 from build system
1. libxl no longer supports TAP disk backend, with appropriate assertions
added and some code paths now return ERROR_FAIL
2. Tap is no longer a supported backend
3. Remove blktap2 entry from MAINTAINERS

A patch to remove blktap2 directory will come later.

Olaf Hering 3802ecbaa9 libxl: add helper function to set device_model_version
An upcoming change will set the value of device_model_version properly
also for the non-HVM case.

Move existing code to new function libxl__domain_set_device_model.
Move also initialization for device_model_stubdomain to that function.
Make sure libxl__domain_build_info_setdefault is called with
device_model_version set.

Update libxl__spawn_stub_dm() and initiate_domain_create() to call the
new function prior libxl__domain_build_info_setdefault() because
device_mode_version is expected to be initialzed.
libxl_domain_need_memory() needs no update because it does not have a
d_config available anyway, and the callers provide a populated b_info.

The upcoming change needs a full libxl_domain_config, and the existing
libxl__domain_build_info_setdefault has just a libxl_domain_build_info
to work with.

Anthony PERARD ae29aa0f8f libxl: When restricted, start QEMU paused
libxl runs the command "cont" later during guest creation; i.e. it
is expecting that QEMU would not do any emulation. Use the "-S"
command option to achieve this.

Unfortunately, when QEMU is started with "-S", it won't write QEMU's
readiness into xenstore. So only activate this option when we have a
QEMU startup notification via QMP available, i.e. when dm_restrict
is activated.

The -S option has the side-effect of suppressing the startup
notification via xenstore: libxl will only get the notification via
QMP.

It is important to rely only on QMP for notification when we have
QMP available, as (due to a qemu bug) not waiting for that QMP
notification may result in the QMP socket becoming blocked, so that
QEMU stops responding to new connections even if no existing ones
are active.

When the QEMU bug happens, the actions taken by both libxl and QEMU
are roughly as follows:
- libxl connects and handshakes with QEMU, then sends the
  cmd "query-status".
- QEMU prepares and maybe tries to send the response,
while also writing "running" into xenstore.
- libxl sees via xenstore that QEMU is running and disconnects from the
QMP socket before receiving the response from the cmd.
=> The QMP socket (monitor) is thereby blocked and will never reply
  to commands on new connections.

This is due to QEMU only responding to one command at a time, and
suspending its monitor (QMP) until the command has been processed and
sent. Disconnecting from the socket doesn't unsuspend the monitor. The
race described here is very likely to happen with QEMU 3.1.50 (during
3.2 development), but can be reproduced with QEMU 3.1.

Coverity understandably complains that get_reaper_lock_and_uid leaks

(The coding style here in this subprocess is a bit anomalous but it's
probably not worth it to convert get_reaper_lock_and_uid to `goto out'

Anthony PERARD 77b595836b libxl_dm: Pre-open QMP socket for QEMU
This patch moves the creation of the QMP unix socket from QEMU to libxl.
But libxl doesn't rely on this yet.

When starting QEMU with dm_restrict=1, pre-open the QMP socket before
exec QEMU. That socket will be useful to find out if QEMU is ready, and
pre-opening it means that libxl can connect to it without waiting for
QEMU to create it.

The pre-opening is conditional, based on the use of dm_restrict
because it is using a new command line option of QEMU, and dm_restrict
support in QEMU is newer.

-chardev socket,fd=X is available with QEMU 2.12, since commit:
> char: allow passing pre-opened socket file descriptor at startup

George Dunlap f45e7d333f libxl: Introduce specific username to be used as a reaper
Untrusted device models must be killed by uid rather than by pid for
safety. To do this reliably, we need another uid, not used for any
other purpose, from which to make the kill system call.

When using xen-qemuuser-range-base, we can repurpose
xen-qemuuser-range-base itself as a UID from which to kill other
devicemodel uids (since domain ID 0 should never have a device model
associated with it).

However, we'd like people to be able to use the device_model_user
feature without also defining xen-qemuuser-range-base (which requires
the ability to 'reserve' 32k+ user IDs).

To that end, introduce the xen-qemuuser-reaper id. When killing by
UID, first look for and use that ID if available; then fall back to
xen-qemuuser-range-base.

Document the new call in docs/features/qemu-deprivilege.pandoc.

George Dunlap 87f9458e34 libxl: Kill QEMU with "reaper" ruid
Using kill(-1) to killing an untrusted dm process with the real uid
equal to the dm_uid isn't guaranteed to succeed: the process in
question may be able to kill the reaper process after the setresuid()
and before the kill().

Instead, set the real uid to the QEMU user for domain 0
(QEMU_USER_RANGE_BASE + 0). The reaper process will still be able to
kill the dm process, but not vice versa.

This, in turn, requires locking to make sure that only one reaper
process is using that uid at a time; otherwise one reaper process may
kill the other reaper process.

Create a lockfile in RUNDIR/dm-reaper-lock, and grab the lock before
executing kill.

In the event that we can't get the lock for some reason, go ahead with
the kill using dm_uid for both real and effective UIDs. This isn't
guaranteed to work, but it's no worse than not trying to kill the
process at all.

NB that this effectively requires admins using device_model_user to
also define xen_qemuuser_range_base; this will be addressed in
subsequent patches.

George Dunlap 0c653574d3 libxl: Kill QEMU by uid when possible
The privcmd fd that a dm_restrict'ed QEMU has gives it permission to
one specific domain ID. This domain ID will probably eventually be
used again. It is therefore necessary to make absolutely sure that a
rogue QEMU process cannot hang around after its domain has exited.

Killing QEMU by pid is insufficient in this situation, because QEMU
may be able to fork() to escape killing. It is surprisingly tricky to
kill a process which can call fork() without races; the only reliable
way is to use kill(-1) to kill all processes with a given uid.

We can use this method only when we're sure that there's only one QEMU
instance per uid. Add a dm_uid into the domain_build_state struct,
and set it in libxl__domain_get_device_model_uid() when it's safe to
kill by UID. Store this in xenstore next to device-model-pid.

On domain destroy, check to see if device-model-uid is present in
xenstore. If so, fork off a reaper process, setuid to that uid, and
do kill(-9) to kill all uids of that type. Otherwise, carry on
destroying by pid.

While we're here, make libxl__destroy_device_model() consistently:
 1. Return an error when anything fails
 2. But continue to do as much clean-up as possible

NOTE that this is not yet completely safe: with ruid == dm_uid, the
device model may be able to kill(-9) the 'reaper' process before the
reaper process can kill it. Further patches will address this.

George Dunlap 436bf83bf1 libxl: Do root checks once in libxl__domain_get_device_model_uid
At the moment, we check for equivalence to literal "root" before
deciding whether to add the `runas` command-line option to QEMU. This
is unsatisfactory for several reasons.

First, just because the string doesn't match "root" doesn't mean the
final uid won't end up being zero; in particular, the range_base
calculations may end up producing "0:NNN", which would be root in any
case.

Secondly, it's almost certainly a configuration error if the resulting
uid ends up to be zero; rather than silently do what was specified but
probably not intended, throw an error.

To fix this, check for root once in
libxl__domain_get_device_model_uid. If the result is root, return an
error; if appropriate, set `runas`.

After that, assume that the presence of state->dm_runas implies that a
`runas` argument should be constructed.

One side effect of this is to check whether device_model_user exists
before passing it to qemu, resulting in better error reporting.

QEMU running under Xen doesn't need mount or IPC functionality.
Create and enter separate namespaces for each of these before

Unsharing is something a process can only do to itself (it would
seem); so add an os-specific "dm_preexec_restrict()" hook just before
we exec() the device model.

Also add checks to depriv-process-checker.sh to verify that dm is
running in a new namespace (or at least, a different one than the

1454509726 scsi: Remove automatic creation of SCSI controllers with -drive if=scsi

It used to create a SCSI controller, now we have to explicitly create
it in libxl. This is done ahead of disks creation in order to try to
keep the controller on the PCI slot as it used to be.

The chosen "id" for drive is the same that QEMU used to create.

This patch also take the opportunity to remove the comments in
qemu_disk_scsi_drive_string() which had a typo and is now out of date.

Michael Young 3e3d89a6d1 -xen-attach is needed for pvh boot with qemu-xen
Currently the boot of a pvh guest using the qemu-xen device model
fails with the error
xen emulation not implemented (yet)
in the qemu-dm log file. This patch adds the missing -xen-attach
argument.

Ian Jackson 6cde84a81b libxl: dm_restrict: DEFINE_USERLOOKUP_HELPER returned a pointer to an auto
When I converted the previous open-coded user lookup functionality
into DEFINE_USERLOOKUP_HELPER, I moved the struct passwd buffer into
the function generated by the macro. This is wrong because that
buffer is used by get{pw,gr}* for its return value, so the helper
function would contrive to return a pointer to the buffer on its own
stack.

Fix this by adding a buffer parameter to the generated helpers, that
the caller must supply, and updating all the call sites.

Ian Jackson bc1bd8ebc3 libxl: dm_restrict: Move to domain_build_info
Right now, this is broken because libxl__build_device_model_args_new
is used also for the qemu run for pv guests for qdisk devices, pvfb,
etc.

We can either make this option properly HVM-specific, or make it
generic.

In principle it is a reasonable request, to make the PV qemu
deprivileged (even though it is not likely to be implemented any time
soon). So make this option generic.

We retain the name "device model" even though it is arguably
inaccurate, because the xl docs already say, for example
For a PV guest a device-model is sometimes used to provide backends
  for certain PV devices

The documentation patch here is pure code motion. For ease of review
we will fix up the docs, so the wording to be right for the new
context, in the next patch.

Ian Jackson bfc8f25556 libxl: Rationalise calculation of user to run qemu as
If the config specifies a user we use that. Otherwise:

When we are not restricting qemu, there is very little point running
it as a different user than root. Indeed, previously, creating the
"magic" users would cause qemu to become slightly dysfunctional (for
example, you can't insert a cd that the qemu user can't read).
So, in that case, default to running it as root.

Conversely, if restriction is requested, we must insist on running
qemu as a non-root user.

Sadly the admin is still required to create 2^16-epsilon users!
