Current libxl code will always enable Hardware Assisted Paging (HAP),
expecting that the hypervisor will fallback to shadow if HAP is not
available. With the changes to DOMCTL_createdomain that's not the case
any longer, and the hypervisor will raise an error if HAP is not
available instead of silently falling back to shadow.
In order to keep the previous functionality report whether HAP is
available or not in XEN_SYSCTL_physinfo, so that the toolstack can
select a sane default if there's no explicit user selection of whether
HAP should be used.
Note that on ARM hardware HAP capability is always reported since it's
a required feature in order to run Xen.

This functionality is obsolete. It was introduced by c/s 41296317a3 into
Xend, but was never exposed in libxl.
Nothing limits this to PV guests, but it makes no sense for HVM guests.
Looking through the XenServer templates, this was used to work around bugs in
the 32bit RHEL/CentOS 4.7 and 4.8 kernels (fixed in 4.9) and RHEL/CentOS/OEL
5.2 and 5.3 kernels (fixed in 5.4). RHEL 4 as a major version went out of
support in 2017, whereas the 5.2/5.3 kernels went out of support when 5.4 was
released in 2009.

Commit 81946a73dc removed
Xenctrl.with_intf based on its undesirable behaviour of opening and
closing a Xenctrl connection with every invocation. This commit
re-introduces with_intf but with an updated behaviour: it maintains a
global Xenctrl connection which is opened upon first usage and kept
open. This handle can be obtained by clients using new functions
get_handle() and close_handle().
The main motivation of re-introducing with_intf is that otherwise
clients will have to implement this functionality individually.

This wrapper hides an opening and closing of the xenctrl handle, which amongst
other things opens and closes multiple device files.
A process should create one handle at the start of day and reuse that; indeed
there is no guarentee that the process will retain sufficient permissions to
re-open /dev/xen/privcmd at a later point.
With the final user of Xenctrl.with_intf removed, drop the wrapper entirely.

XEN_DOMCTL_max_vcpus is a mandatory hypercall, but nothing actually prevents a
toolstack from unpausing a domain with no vcpus.
Originally, d->vcpus[] was an embedded array in struct domain, but c/s
fb442e217 "x86_64: allow more vCPU-s per guest" in Xen 4.0 altered it to being
dynamically allocated. A side effect of this is that d->vcpu[] is NULL until
XEN_DOMCTL_max_vcpus has completed, but a lot of hypercalls blindly
dereference it.
Even today, the behaviour of XEN_DOMCTL_max_vcpus is a mandatory singleton
call which can't change the number of vcpus once a value has been chosen.
In preparation to remote the hypercall, extend xen_domctl_createdomain with
the a max_vcpus field and arrange for all callers to pass the appropriate
value. There is no change in construction behaviour yet, but later patches
will rearrange the hypervisor internals.
For the python stubs, extend the domain_create keyword list to take a
max_vcpus parameter, in lieu of deleting the pyxc_domain_max_vcpus function.

XEN_DOMCTL_set_gnttab_limits is a fairly new hypercall, and is strictly
mandatory. As it pertains to domain limits, it should be provided at
createdomain time.
In preparation to remove the hypercall, extend xen_domctl_createdomain with
the fields and arrange for all callers to pass appropriate details. There is
no change in construction behaviour yet, but later patches will rearrange the
hypervisor internals, then delete the hypercall.

set_max_evtchn is somewhat weird. It was introduced with the event_fifo work,
but has never been used. Still, it is a bounding on resources consumed by the
event channel infrastructure, and should be part of createdomain, rather than
editable after the fact.
Drop XEN_DOMCTL_set_max_evtchn completely (including XSM hooks and libxc
wrappers), and retain the functionality in XEN_DOMCTL_createdomain.

This function is entirely internal to xenctrl stubs, and serves only to
convert the uuid string to an integer array (making 16 memory allocations as
it goes), while the C stubs turns the integer array back into a binary array.
Instead, pass the string all the way down into C, and have sscanf() unpack it
directly into a xen_domain_handle_t object.

There are no current users which I can locate. One piece of xend which didn't
move forwards into xl/libxl is this:
# Configure host CPUID consistency checks, which must be satisfied for this
# VM to be allowed to run on this host's processor type:
#cpuid_check=[ '1:ecx=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx1xxxxx' ]
# - Host must have VMX feature flag set
The implementation of xc_cpuid_check() is conceptually broken. Dom0's view of
CPUID is not the approprite view to check, and will be wrong in the presence
of CPUID masking/faulting, and for HVM-based toolstack domains.
If it turns out that the functionality is required, it should be implemented
in terms of XEN_SYSCTL_get_cpuid_policy to use the proper CPUID view.

The alternative backend (a xen-api/xapi shim) is no longer around and
so this stuff is now just baggage which is getting in the way of
refactoring libxenctrl.
Nested virt probably suffices for this use case now.
This was the last component of the osdep infrastructure, so all the
dynamic loading etc stuff all falls away too.
As part of this I was forced to investigate the twisty
xc_map_foreign_* maze, which I have added to the
toolstack-library-apis doc in the hopes of doing something sensible.
NetBSD and Solaris now call xc_map_foreign_bulk_compat directly from
their xc_map_foreign_bulk, which could have been achieved by using
some ifdefs around a renamed function. This will fall out in the wash
when these functions move to their own library.
