Marek Marczykowski-Górecki deb0e164de xenconsole: add option to avoid escape sequences in log
Add --replace-escape option to xenconsoled, which replaces ESC with
'.' in console output written to log file. This makes it slightly safer
to do tail -f on a console output of untrusted guest.
The pty output is unaffected by this option.

Unilaterally making string.h a prerequisite for console.h is going to

Bhupinder Thakur 7e758299dd xen/arm: vpl011: Add support for vuart console in xenconsole
This patch finally adds the support for vuart console. It adds
two new fields in the console initialization:

optional flag tells whether the console is optional.

use_gnttab tells whether the ring buffer should be allocated using
grant table.

The VUART console is enabled ony for ARM.

Bhupinder Thakur 2a9e1692c9 xen/arm: vpl011: Add support for multiple consoles in xenconsole
This patch adds the support for multiple consoles and introduces the
iterator functions to operate on multiple consoles.

The functions called by the iterators check that they are operating
on valid I/O parameters. This ensures that if a particular console is
not initialized then the functions will not do anything for that
console type.

This patch introduces a new console_evtchn_unmask function. This function
unmasks the console event channel if it is masked for some timeout
period.

One optimization that has been done is to merge the two for loops.

One for loop was used to iterate through all domains and
unmask the domain event channels which had been rate limited for a
specified duration.

The other for loop was run to add the event channel fd and the tty fd to
the poll list.

These two for loops were merged so that the these operations can be done
in one iteration instead of two iterations.

The new library exposes an interface equivalent to

Upon request (via #define XC_WANT_COMPAT_GNTTAB_API) libxenctrl will
provide a compat API for the old names. This is used by qemu-xen for
the time being. qemu-xen-traditional is updated in lockstep.

This leaves a few grant table related functions which go via privcmd
(GNTTABOP) rather than ioctls on the /dev/xen/gnt* devices in
libxenctrl. Specifically:

  - xc_gnttab_get_version
  - xc_gnttab_map_table_v1

These functions do not appear to be needed by qemu-dm, qemu-pv
(provision of device model to HVM guests and PV backends respectively)
or by libvchan suggesting they are not needed by non-toolstack uses of
event channels.

The new library uses a version script to ensure that only expected
symbols are exported and to version them such that ABI guarantees can
be kept in the future.

After this change libxenvchan no longer needs to link against

These functions do not appear to be needed by qemu-dm, qemu-pv

Ross Lagerwall 26d4eebee8 xenconsoled: Remove unexpected daemonize behavior
Previously, xenconsoled's daemonize function would do nothing if its
parent process is init (as it is under systemd but not sysv init).
This is confusing. Instead, always daemonize when asked to, but use the

Because a pidfile is only written when daemonizing, drop the pidfile
parameters from the service file (systemd keeps track of the pids

XenServer's VM density testing uncovered a regression when moving from
sysvinit to systemd where the file descriptor limit dropped from 4096 to

One solution is to use LimitNOFILE=4096 in xenconsoled.service to match the

number of domains are running, attempt to increase the limit.

currently only xenstore uses these references. Change the xenconsole

correctly - for libxl, the xenstore path /tool/xenconsoled/domid
specifies the domain containing xenconsoled.

Wei Liu cc5434c933 Switch from select() to poll() in xenconsoled's IO loop
In Linux select() typically supports up to 1024 file descriptors. This can be
a problem when user tries to boot up many guests. Switching to poll() has
minimum impact on existing code and has better scalibility.

pollfd array is dynamically allocated / reallocated. If the array fails to
expand, we just ignore the incoming fd.

Updated: reset *_pollfd after use.

This fixes regression 14869.

Also remove unused slave_pollfd in strcut domain.

David Vrabel 2b5fb80ff7 xenconsoled: clean-up after all dead domains
xenconsoled expected domains that are being shutdown to end up in the
the DYING state and would only clean-up such domains. HVM domains
either didn't enter the DYING state or weren't in long enough for
xenconsoled to notice.

For every shutdown HVM domain, xenconsoled would leak memory, grow its
list of domains and (if guest console logging was enabled) leak the
log file descriptor. If the file descriptors were leaked and enough
HVM domains were shutdown, no more console connections would work as
the evtchn device could not be opened. Guests would then block
waiting to send console output.

Fix this by tagging domains that exist in enum_domains(). Afterwards,
all untagged domains are assumed to be dead and are shutdown and
cleaned up.

Ian Campbell debddaa56c nstore: rename public xenstore headers
The xenstore header xs.h is producing conflicts with other software[1].

xs is a too short identifier and does not matche the library. Renaming
the headers to xenstore.h and xenstore_lib.h is the easiest way to make
them easy recognizable and prevent furthe problems.

Stefano Stabellini ce8ffdb551 tools: xenconsole[d] and libxl: multiple console support
This patch implements the new protocol for handling pv consoles and
emulated serials as described in the document docs/misc/console.txt.

The changes are:

- xenconsoled: do not write the pty under serial in xenstore if
xenconsoled is handling a consolepath;

- xenconsole: implement support for an explicit console type parameter;
the parameter can be "pv", to specify that the user wants to
connect to a pv console, or "serial", to specify that the user wants to
connect to an emulated serial. If the type parameter hasn't been
specified be the user, xenconsole tries to guess which type of console
it has to connect to, defaulting to pv console for pv guests and
emulated serial for hvm guests.

- xenconsole: use the new xenstore paths;

- libxl: rename libxl_console_constype to libxl_console_consback:
constype is used to to specify whether qemu or xenconsoled provides the
backend, so I renamed it to libxl_console_consback to make it more
obvious that we are talking about backends;

- libxl: add a new libxl_console_constype to specify if the console is
an emulated serial or a pv console;

- libxl: support the new xenconsole "type" command line parameter;

- libxl: use the "output" node under console in xenstore to tell qemu
where do we want the output of this pv console to go;

- remove the legacy "serialpath" from xenconsoled altogether

Stefano Stabellini 7255b375df Before this patch only log messages with precisely priority
LOG_WARNING (or precisely LOG_DEBUG if -v) would be logged.

xenconsoled only actually logs using LOG_ERR and LOG_DEBUG so for the
most part we would have been logging absolutely nothing up until now.

Linux provides a LOG_UPTO macro but I'm not sure how portable that is
so I have opencoded the list of levels.

Do I get some sort of prize for fixing a bug introduced in 2005?
