The configuration file can contain typos or various errors that could prevent
live update from succeeding (e.g. a flag only valid on a different version).
Unknown entries in the config file would be ignored on startup normally,
add a strict --config-test that live-update can use to check that the config file
is valid *for the new binary*.
For compatibility with running old code during live update recognize
--live --help as an equivalent to --config-test.

Poll has been the default since 2014, I think we can safely say by now
that poll() works and we don't need to fall back to select().
This will allow fixing up the way we call poll to be more efficient
(and pave the way for introducing epoll support):
currently poll wraps the select API, which is inefficient.

This commit cleans up code to reduce compiler warnings:
* remove unused open statements (warning 33)
* remove unused 'rec' declarations (warnign 39)
* remove unused type declarations (warning 34)
* mark unused variables with an underscore (warning 27)
* mark unused value declarations with an underscore (warning 32)
This commit does not include changes to fix compiler warnings 52
(matching against strings in exceptions). These changes have no impact
on functionality.

This allows to fall back to the original Unix.select if preferred. It could be
useful for debugging purposes too.
