George Dunlap ad82632486 build: add compile_commands.json target
Add a convenience target generating the compilation database from a
built object tree, alongside the other developer conveniences (tags,
cscope, cloc -- the last of which already walks the same .cmd files):

    make -C xen compile_commands.json

The output lands in the object tree root. For an in-tree build,
clangd and other consumers discover it there automatically when
opening files; for an out-of-tree build, symlink it into the source
tree root (consumers search the ancestors of the file being edited).

Note the database records the compiler invocations actually used.
With a clang build it is consumable by clangd as-is; for a gcc build,
clang-based tools may need a small .clangd configuration
(CompileFlags: Remove/Add) dropping gcc-only flags.

Also add the generated file to .gitignore.

Jan Beulich c6f5590c93 vPCI: introduce private header
Before adding more private stuff to xen/vpci.h, split it up. In order to
be able to include the private header first in a CU, the per-arch struct
decls also need to move (to new asm/vpci.h files).

While adjusting the test harness'es Makefile, also switch the pre-existing
header symlink-ing rule to a pattern one.

Apart from in the test harness code, things only move; no functional

Anthony PERARD 98d95437ed libs: Fix auto-generation of version-script for unstable libs
When there isn't a version-script for a shared library (like for
unstable libs), we create one based on the current Xen version. But
that version-script became out-of-date as soon as Xen's version
changes and make as no way to regenerate the version-script on
rebuild.

For unstable libs, we only needs the symver to be different from a
previous release of Xen. There's an option "--default-symver" which
allow to use the soname as symver and as the soname have the Xen
release version, it will be different for every release. With
--default-symver we don't need to generate a version-script.

But we also need to know if there's already an existing version script
, for that we introduce $(version-script) to be used to point to the
path of the existing script. (Guessing if a version script exist for a
stable library with for example $(wildcard) won't work as a file will
exist when building the library without this patch.)

We don't need the version-script unless we are making the shared
library so it is removed from the "all" target.

Luca Fancellu 01b4592114 xen/Makefile: remove Cppcheck invocation from the Makefile
The script xen-analysis.py is going to be used for the analysis with
cppcheck, so remove the rules from the Makefile.

The python script xen/tools/merge_cppcheck_reports.py was used by the
makefile rules, but its functionality is integrated in the
xen-analysis.py script now, so it can be removed.

Remove some entry from the .gitignore related to Cppcheck invocation
from Makefile.

This is a partial revert of commit 43aa3f6e72 where the entry
xen/xen-cppcheck.xml from .gitignore is reverted because its path has
changed, *.c.cppcheck entry is not needed anymore either,
merge_cppcheck_reports.py script is reverted for the reason above,
all makefile changes are reverted.
Every other change to processor.h, config.h, kconfig.h is kept because
they are used with the new process.

are reverted, convert_misra_doc.py script is kept as it is used with the

Luca Fancellu 02b26c02c7 xen/scripts: add cppcheck tool to the xen-analysis.py script
Add Cppcheck analysis to the xen-analysis.py script using the
arguments --run-cppcheck.

Now cppcheck analysis will build Xen while the analysis is performed
on the source files, it will produce a text report and an additional
html output when the script is called with --cppcheck-html.

With this patch cppcheck will benefit of platform configuration files
that will help it to understand the target of the compilation and
improve the analysis. These are XML files placed in
xen/tools/cppcheck-plat/, describing to cppcheck the length of basic
types to help it in the analysis.

To do so:
 - Update xen-analysis.py with the code to integrate cppcheck.
 - add platform configuration files for cppcheck..
 - add cppcheck-cc.sh script that is a wrapper for cppcheck and it's
used as Xen compiler, it will intercept all flags given from the
make build system and it will execute cppcheck on the compiled
file together with the file compilation.
 - guarded hypercall-defs.c with CPPCHECK define because cppcheck
gets confused as the file does not contain c code.
 - add false-positive-cppcheck.json file
 - update documentation.
 - update .gitignore

Add a generic docker image template to be used to automatically generate
docker files for different configurations:

- different targets (qemu arm, arm64 and x86)
- different host platforms (x86 or arm64)

During a call to 'make all', only the images for the host platform we
run it on in the CI is generated.
If needed, images for an other host platform can be generated manually
by calling the right make target (see make help).

Add a build script to build and run xen on qemu using Yocto.
The script supports arm32, arm64 and x86_64 and checks that dom0 is
properly booting. At this stage this does not run any guest on top of

and run a system using a Xen source tree.

Anthony PERARD bfd3e9945d build: fix x86 out-of-tree build without EFI
We can't have a source file with the same name that exist in both the
common code and in the arch specific code for efi/. This can lead to
confusion in make and it can pick up the wrong source file. This issue
lead to a failure to build a pv-shim for x86 out-of-tree, as this is
one example of an x86 build using the efi/stub.c.

The issue is that in out-of-tree, make might find x86/efi/stub.c via
VPATH, but as the target needs to be rebuilt due to FORCE, make
actually avoid changing the source tree and rebuilt the target with
VPATH ignored, so $@ lead to the build tree where "stub.c" doesn't
exist yet so a link is made to "common/stub.c".

Rework the new common/stub.c file to have a different name than the
already existing one, by renaming the existing one. We can hide the
compat aliases that x86 uses behind CONFIG_COMPAT so a Arm build will
not have them.

Also revert the change to the rule that creates symbolic links it's
better to just recreate the link in cases where an existing file exist
or the link goes to the wrong file.

Avoid using $(EFIOBJ-y) as an alias for $(clean-files), add
"stub.c" directly to $(clean-files).

Also update .gitignore as this was also missing from the original
patch.

Bertrand Marquis 57caa53753 xen: Add MISRA support to cppcheck make rule
cppcheck MISRA addon can be used to check for non compliance to some of
the MISRA standard rules.

Add a CPPCHECK_MISRA variable that can be set to "y" using make command
line to generate a cppcheck report including cppcheck misra checks.

When MISRA checking is enabled, a file with a text description suitable
for cppcheck misra addon is generated out of Xen documentation file
which lists the rules followed by Xen (docs/misra/rules.rst).

By default MISRA checking is turned off.

While adding cppcheck-misra files to gitignore, also fix the missing /
for htmlreport gitignore

Bertrand Marquis 43aa3f6e72 xen/build: Add cppcheck and cppcheck-html make rules
cppcheck can be used to check Xen code quality.

To create a report do "make cppcheck" on a built tree adding any options
you added during the process you used to build xen (like CROSS_COMPILE
or XEN_TARGET_ARCH). This will generate an xml report xen-cppcheck.xml.

To create a html report do "make cppcheck-html" in the same way and a
full report to be seen in a browser will be generated in
cppcheck-htmlreport/index.html.

For better results it is recommended to build your own cppcheck from the
latest sources that you can find at [1].
Development and result analysis has been done with cppcheck 2.7.

The Makefile rule is searching for all C files which have been compiled
(ie which have a generated .o file) and is running cppcheck on all of
them using the current configuration of xen so only the code actually
compiled is checked.

A new tool is introduced to merge all cppcheck reports into one global
report including all findings and removing duplicates.

Some extra variables can be used to customize the report:
- CPPCHECK can be used to give the full path to the cppcheck binary to
use (default is to use the one from the standard path).
- CPPCHECK_HTMLREPORT can be used to give the full path to
cppcheck-htmlreport (default is to use the one from the standard path).

This has been tested on several arm configurations (x86 should work but
has not been tested).

Anthony PERARD 7115fa562f build: adding out-of-tree support to the xen build
This implement out-of-tree support, there's two ways to create an
out-of-tree build tree (after that, `make` in that new directory
works):
    make O=build
mkdir build; cd build; make -f ../Makefile
also works with an absolute path for both.

This implementation only works if the source tree is clean, as we use
VPATH.

This patch copies most new code with handling out-of-tree build from
Linux v5.12.

Anthony PERARD 06ef696c85 build: introduce if_changed_deps
This macro does compare command line like if_changed, but it also
rewrite the dependencies generated by $(CC) in order to depend on a
CONFIG_* as generated by kconfig instead of depending on autoconf.h.
This allow to make a change in kconfig options and only rebuild the
object that uses that CONFIG_* option.

cmd_and_record isn't needed anymore as it is replace by
cmd_and_fixdep.

There's only one .*.d dependency file left which is explicitly
included as a workound, all the other are been absorb into the .*.cmd
dependency files via `fixdep`. So including .*.d can be removed from
the makefile.

Also adjust "cloc" recipe due to .*.d been replace by .*.cmd files.

This imports fixdep.c and if_changed_deps macro from Linux v5.12.

Juergen Gross e1e1da600b add .gitignore entries for *.[is] below xen
Instead of listing each single file with .s or .i suffixes in
.gitignore use pattern based entries. Restrict those to the xen
directory as we have e.g. tools/libs/stat/bindings/swig/xenstat.i in
our tree.

Below xen the pattern based entries are fine, as we have pattern rules
for creating *.s and *.i files in xen/Rules.mk.
