Julian Vetter baaa185201 xen/arm: report clock_frequency via sysctl physinfo, not createdomain
The xen_arch_domainconfig.clock_frequency value is populated in
domain_vtimer_init() during XEN_DOMCTL_createdomain from the global
timer_dt_clock_frequency, which comes from the host's DT timer node and
has nothing to do with the domain being created. Like now removed
GIC_NATIVE resolution, this is a host-wide system property being
smuggled out through a domain-creation IN struct.

Expose it instead as a new arm_clock_frequency_hz field in
XEN_SYSCTL_physinfo, populated via arch_do_physinfo(), and mirroring how
the GIC capability bits were already moved there.

Rather than making the field dependant on DT boot, make Xen always
report the timer frequency, either via the DT "clock-frequency" node, or
directly via CNTFRQ_EL0. preinit_xen_time() already computes cpu_khz for
every boot path. The renamed timer_clock_frequency_hz now captures
whichever of the two produced that value, in full Hz precision, instead
of only recording the DT case. So, ACPI guests get a real value too,
allowing to drop the special case.

The DT "clock-frequency" property exists because firmware might leave
CNTFRQ_EL0 wrong, and since CNTFRQ_EL0 cannot be trapped the only fix is
to replicate the correct value into the guest DT. To keep that signal, a
new XEN_SYSCTL_PHYSCAP_ARM_TIMER_DT_FREQ capability bit records whether
arm_clock_frequency_hz came from the DT property. Then libxl only emits
a "clock-frequency" property into the guest timer node when that bit is
set. A guest whose CNTFRQ_EL0 is already correct keeps an unmodified
timer node, exactly as before.

Although the CNTFRQ_EL0 register is 64 bits wide, and some current timer
implementations run at 1GHz, a 32bit value is sufficient to store the
timer value, because it only mirrors the DT 'clock-frequency' property,
which the bindings define as a single 32-bit cell.

In struct xen_sysctl_physinfo the new field just reuses the former pad
word, so sysctl consumers are unaffected. struct xen_arch_domainconfig
however loses clock_frequency from its middle, which shrinks the struct
and shifts every field after it, so bump XEN_DOMCTL_INTERFACE_VERSION.

The xen_arch_domainconfig parameter passed to domain_vtimer_init() is no
longer needed, so drop that parameter entirely. libxl now fetches the
frequency via libxl_get_physinfo() in libxl__arch_domain_save_config()
instead of reading it back out of the createdomain reply. The OCaml
xen_arch_domainconfig mirror drops the field too.

Andrew Cooper 365d2a5be3 tools/ocaml: Fix crash in Xenctrl.domain_getinfo{,list}() on ARM
The Store_field(result, 16, arch_config) sits inside an #ifdef x86, meaning
that on other architectures the pointer is not filled in. Ocaml code then
falls over a NULL(ish) pointer (really the Val_unit used to initialise
'result') when the layout in the heap doesn't match the type system.

Rearrange alloc_domaininfo() to avoid this. Similarly to
physinfo_arch_caps(), raise an exception if the architecture code hasn't
filled in an appropriate tag. Move the setup of arch_domainconfig to be
common logic.

In order to simplify the addition of other architectures, remove the
arch_config variable (reusing tmp as it's touched exactly once), and rename
x86_arch_config to be arch_config so each architecture can fill in a suitable
one without needing more local variables.

Edwin Török 99e4554893 ocaml/libs/xc: Fix NULL dereference with physinfo_arch_caps()
`Tag_cons` is `0` and is meant to be used as the tag argument for
`caml_alloc`/`caml_alloc_small` when constructing a non-empty list.

The empty list is `Val_emptylist` instead, which is really just `Val_int(0)`.

Assigning `0` to a list value like this is equivalent to assigning the naked
pointer `NULL` to the field. Naked pointers are not valid in OCaml 5, however
even in OCaml <5.x any attempt to iterate on the list will lead to a segfault.

The list currently only has an opaque type, so no code would have reason to
iterate on it currently, but we shouldn't construct invalid OCaml values that
might lead to a crash when exploring the type.

`Val_emptylist` is available since OCaml 3.01 as a constant.

        | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
cc1: all warnings being treated as errors

but it was buggy too.

First, it tried storing an int in a pointer slot, causing heap corruption.

Next, it is not legitimate to exclude arm32 in the toolstack as it explicitly
can operate an arm64 toolstack and build arm64 domains. That in turn means
that you can't stash a C uint32_t in an OCaml int.

Rewrite the arch_capabilities handling from scratch. Break it out into a
separate function, and make the construction of arch_physinfo_cap_flags common
to prevent other indirection bugs.

Edwin Török 5fb7851ff2 tools/ocaml/xc: Don't reference Custom objects with the GC lock released
The modification to the _H() macro for Ocaml 5 support introduced a subtle
bug. From the manual:

  https://ocaml.org/manual/intfc.html#ss:parallel-execution-long-running-c-code

"After caml_release_runtime_system() was called and until
caml_acquire_runtime_system() is called, the C code must not access any OCaml
data, nor call any function of the run-time system, nor call back into OCaml
code."

Previously, the value was a naked C pointer, so dereferencing it wasn't
"accessing any Ocaml data", but the fix to avoid naked C pointers added a
layer of indirection through an Ocaml Custom object, meaning that the common
pattern of using _H() in a blocking section is unsafe.

In order to fix:

 * Drop the _H() macro and replace it with a static inline xch_of_val().
 * Opencode the assignment into Data_custom_val() in the constructors.
 * Rename "value xch" parameters to "value xch_val" so we can consistently
have "xc_interface *xch" on the stack, and obtain the pointer with the GC
   lock still held.
 * Drop the _D() macro while at it, because it's just pointless indirection.

I was really hoping to avoid this, but its now too late in the 4.17 freeze and

as it has proved to be buggy time and time again.

Even after a protracted discussion on what the new API ought to mean, attempts

intermix), whereas what we actually want is either a list of x86 flags, or a
list of ARM flags (that cannot intermix).

Rework the Ocaml types to avoid the ABI special case and move the list
primitive, and adjust the C bindings to match.

Jane Malalane 2ce11ce249 x86/HVM: allow per-domain usage of hardware virtualized APIC
Introduce a new per-domain creation x86 specific flag to
select whether hardware assisted virtualization should be used for
x{2}APIC.

A per-domain option is added to xl in order to select the usage of
x{2}APIC hardware assisted virtualization, as well as a global
configuration option.

Having all APIC interaction exit to Xen for emulation is slow and can
induce much overhead. Hardware can speed up x{2}APIC by decoding the
APIC access and providing a VM exit with a more specific exit reason
than a regular EPT fault or by altogether avoiding a VM exit.

On the other hand, being able to disable x{2}APIC hardware assisted
virtualization can be useful for testing and debugging purposes.

Note:

- vmx_install_vlapic_mapping doesn't require modifications regardless
of whether the guest has "Virtualize APIC accesses" enabled or not,
i.e., setting the APIC_ACCESS_ADDR VMCS field is fine so long as
virtualize_apic_accesses is supported by the CPU.

- Both per-domain and global assisted_x{2}apic options are not part of
the migration stream, unless explicitly set in the respective
configuration files. Default settings of assisted_x{2}apic done
internally by the toolstack, based on host capabilities at create
time, are not migrated.

Jane Malalane 6b2b9b3405 x86: report Interrupt Controller Virtualization capabilities
Add XEN_SYSCTL_PHYSCAP_X86_ASSISTED_XAPIC and
XEN_SYSCTL_PHYSCAP_X86_ASSISTED_X2APIC to report accelerated xAPIC and
x2APIC, on x86 hardware. This is so that xAPIC and x2APIC virtualization
can subsequently be enabled on a per-domain basis.
No such features are currently implemented on AMD hardware.

HW assisted xAPIC virtualization will be reported if HW, at the
minimum, supports virtualize_apic_accesses as this feature alone means
that an access to the APIC page will cause an APIC-access VM exit. An
APIC-access VM exit provides a VMM with information about the access
causing the VM exit, unlike a regular EPT fault, thus simplifying some
internal handling.

HW assisted x2APIC virtualization will be reported if HW supports
virtualize_x2apic_mode and, at least, either apic_reg_virt or
virtual_intr_delivery. This also means that
sysctl follows the conditionals in vmx_vlapic_msr_changed().

For that purpose, also add an arch-specific "capabilities" parameter
to struct xen_sysctl_physinfo.

Note that this interface is intended to be compatible with AMD so that
AVIC support can be introduced in a future patch. Unlike Intel that
has multiple controls for APIC Virtualization, AMD has one global
'AVIC Enable' control bit, so fine-graining of APIC virtualization
control cannot be done on a common interface.

Roger Pau Monne 7379f9e10a gnttab: allow setting max version per-domain
Introduce a new domain create field so that toolstack can specify the

Previously this was only settable on a per host basis using the
gnttab command line option.

Note the version is specified using 4 bits, which leaves room to
specify up to grant table version 15. Given that we only have 2 grant
table versions right now, and a new version is unlikely in the near
future using 4 bits seems more than enough.

xenstored stubdomains are limited to grant table v1 because the
current MiniOS code used to build them only has support for grants v1.
There are existing limits set for xenstored stubdomains at creation

Igor Druzhinin 73c932d0ea tools/libxc: use uint32_t for pirq in xc_domain_irq_permission
Current unit8_t for pirq argument in this interface is too restrictive
causing failures on modern hardware with lots of GSIs. That extends down to
XEN_DOMCTL_irq_permission ABI structure where it needs to be fixed up
as well.

Internal Xen structures appear to be fine. Existing users of the interface
in tree (libxl, ocaml and python bindings) are currently using signed int
for pirq representation which should be wide enough. Converting them to
uint32_t now is desirable to avoid accidental passing of a negative
number (probably denoting an error code) by caller as pirq, but left for

Roger Pau Monné 0570d7f276 x86/msr: introduce an option for compatible MSR behavior selection
Introduce an option to allow selecting a behavior similar to the pre
Xen 4.15 one for accesses to MSRs not explicitly handled. Since commit
84e848fd7a and 322ec7c89f accesses to MSRs not explicitly
handled by Xen result in the injection of a #GP to the guest. This
is a behavior change since previously a #GP was only injected if
accessing the MSR on the real hardware would also trigger a #GP, or if
the attempted to be set bits wouldn't match the hardware values (for
PV). The reasons for not leaking hardware MSR values and injecting a
#GP are fully valid, so the solution proposed here should be
considered a temporary workaround until all the required MSRs are
properly handled.

This seems to be problematic for some guests, so introduce an option
to fallback to this kind of legacy behavior without leaking the
underlying MSR values to the guest.

When the option is set, for both PV and HVM don't inject a #GP to the
guest on MSR read if reading the underlying MSR doesn't result in a
#GP, do the same for writes and simply discard the value to be written
on that case.

Note that for guests restored or migrated from previous Xen versions
the option is enabled by default, in order to keep a compatible
MSR behavior. Such compatibility is done at the libxl layer, to avoid
higher-level toolstacks from having to know the details about this flag.

Julien Grall 59b087e395 tools/ocaml: Fix stubs build when OCaml has been compiled with -safe-string
The OCaml code has been fixed to handle properly -safe-string in Xen
4.11, however the stubs part were missed.

On OCaml newer than 4.06.1, String_Val() will return a const char *
when using -safe-string leading to build failure when this is used
in place where char * is expected.

The main use in Xen code base is when a new string is allocated. The
suggested approach by the OCaml community [1] is to use the helper
caml_alloc_initialized_string() but it was introduced by OCaml 4.06.1.

The next best approach is to cast String_val() to (char *) as the helper
would have done. So use it when we need to update the new string using
memcpy().

Take the opportunity to remove the unnecessary cast of the source as
mempcy() is expecting a void *.

Paul Durrant babde47a3f introduce a 'passthrough' configuration option to xl.cfg...
...and hence the ability to disable IOMMU mappings, and control EPT
sharing.

This patch introduces a new 'libxl_passthrough' enumeration into
libxl_domain_create_info. The value will be set by xl either when it parses
a new 'passthrough' option in xl.cfg, or implicitly if there is passthrough
hardware specified for the domain.

If the value of the passthrough configuration option is 'disabled' then
the XEN_DOMCTL_CDF_iommu flag will be clear in the xen_domctl_createdomain
flags, thus allowing the toolstack to control whether the domain gets
IOMMU mappings or not (where previously they were globally set).

If the value of the passthrough configuration option is 'sync_pt' then
a new 'iommu_opts' field in xen_domctl_createdomain will be set with the
value XEN_DOMCTL_IOMMU_no_sharept. This will override the global default
set in iommu_hap_pt_share, thus allowing the toolstack to control whether
EPT sharing is used for the domain.

If the value of passthrough is 'enabled' then xl will choose an appropriate
default according to the type of domain and hardware support.

NOTE: The 'iommu_memkb' overhead in libxl_domain_build_info will now only
be set if passthrough is 'sync_pt' (or xl has chosen this mode as
      a default).
