Jan Beulich 63ebd0e964 releases: use newer compression methods for tarballs
Other projects have long switched to xz and/or lzip.

Tidy things some as well: With the removal of qemu from the tarball,
intermediately extracting the tarball again has become wasteful. Drop
that. Invoke compressors using asynchronous lists, to reduce overall
latency. Drop the -v option from the (previously implicit) gzip
invocation.

Jan Beulich c08845e230 docs/sending-patches: document "Amends:" tag
On rare occasions Fixes: isn't quite appropriate to use, yet another
commit still wants making a connection to in a formalized way. Such could
e.g. happen if a pretty obvious optimization was left out (which isn't a
bug, but still a shortcoming). Formalize Amends: as a tage to use in such
a situation.

Jan Beulich 86fc80ca8e process/release: mention MAINTAINERS adjustments
For many major releases I've been updating ./MAINTAINERS _after_ the
respective branch was handed over to me. That update, however, is
relevant not only from the .1 minor release onwards, but right from the
.0 release. Hence it ought to be done as one of the last things before
tagging the tree for the new major release.

See the seemingly unrelated parts (as far as the commit subject goes) of
e.g. 9d465658b4 ("update Xen version to 4.20.1-pre") for an example.

Juergen Gross c4d6802d33 docs: add a best practices coding guide
Today the CODING_STYLE contains a section "Handling unexpected
conditions" specific to the hypervisor. This section is kind of
misplaced for a coding style. It should rather be part of a "Coding
best practices" guide.

Add such a guide as docs/process/coding-best-practices.pandoc and
move the mentioned section from CODING_STYLE to the new file, while
converting the format to pandoc.

Obtaining code over an insecure transport is a terrible idea for
blatently obvious reasons. Even for non-executable data, insecure
transports are considered deprecated.

This patch enforces the use of secure transports for all xenbits git

Ian Jackson eff2fbe4dd docs/process/release-checklist.txt: Say to push staging branch
Preparing a real release, not just an RC, involves making commits.
Typically, those will be on staging-$x. The tag will refer to them,
and the checklist already says to push them to xenbits.

But if the *branch* is not pushed, then people who just "git fetch"
won't get the tag because it refers to commits they don't have.
(Because of the strange rules git has about tag fetching.)
Worse, the same may be true of people who "git clone".

And anyway, those commits *should* be fed to staging-$x.
