Andrew Cooper d2aecd86c4 libxc/restore: Fix REC_TYPE_X86_PV_VCPU_XSAVE data auditing (take 2)
It turns out that a bug (since forever) in Xen causes XSAVE records to have
non-architectural behaviour on xsave-capable hardware, when a PV guest has not
touched the state.

In such a case, the data record returned from Xen is 2*uint64_t, both claiming
the (illegitimate) state of %xcr0 and %xcr0_accum being 0.

Adjust the bound in handle_x86_pv_vcpu_blob() to cope with this.

Despite as suggested in c/s 685e922d6f, not all HVM_PARAMs are handled
in the same way. HVM_PARAM_PAE_ENABLED is a toolstack-only value, and
the xc_cpuid_apply_policy() used to be the only consumer.

Andrew Cooper 5932ee1e06 libxc/restore: Fix data auditing in handle_x86_pv_info()
handle_x86_pv_info() has a subtle bug. It uses an 'else if' chain with a
clause in the middle which doesn't exit unconditionally. In practice, this
means that when restoring a 32bit PV guest, later sanity checks are skipped.

Rework the logic a little to be simpler. There are exactly two valid
combinations of fields in X86_PV_INFO, so factor this out and check them all
in one go, before making adjustments to the current domain.

Once adjustments have been completed successfully, sanity check the result
against the X86_PV_INFO settings in one go, rather than piece-wise.

Andrew Cooper e6854fe547 xen/pvh: Fix segment selector ABI
The written ABI states that %es will be set up, but libxc doesn't do so. In
practice, it breaks `rep movs` inside guests before they reload %es.

The written ABI doesn't mention %ss, but libxc does set it up. Having %ds
different to %ss is obnoxous to work with, as different registers have
different implicit segments.

Modify the spec to state that %ss is set up as a flat read/write segment.
This a) matches the Multiboot 1 spec, b) matches what is set up in practice,
and c) is the more sane behaviour for guests to use.

George Dunlap 8c79c129a6 x86: Don't increase ApicIdCoreSize past 7
Changeset ca2eee92df ("x86, hvm: Expose host core/HT topology to HVM
guests") attempted to "fake up" a topology which would induce guest
operating systems to not treat vcpus as sibling hyperthreads. This
involved actually reporting hyperthreading as available, but giving
vcpus every other ApicId; which in turn led to doubling the ApicIds
per core by bumping the ApicIdCoreSize by one. In particular, Ryzen
3xxx series processors, and reportedly EPYC "Rome" cpus -- have an
ApicIdCoreSize of 7; the "fake" topology increases this to 8.

Unfortunately, Windows running on modern AMD hardware -- including
Ryzen 3xxx series processors, and reportedly EPYC "Rome" cpus --
doesn't seem to cope with this value being higher than 7. (Linux
guests have so far continued to cope.)

A "proper" fix is complicated and it's too late to fix it either for
4.13, or to backport to supported branches. As a short-term fix,
limit this value to 7.

This does mean that a Linux guest, booted on such a system without
this change, and then migrating to a system with this change, with
more than 64 vcpus, would see an apparent topology change. This is a
low enough risk in practice that enabling this limit unilaterally, to
allow other guests to boot without manual intervention, is worth it.

Andrew Cooper 685e922d6f tools/libxc: Rework xc_cpuid_apply_policy() to use {get,set}_cpu_policy()
The purpose of this change is to stop using xc_cpuid_do_domctl(), and to stop
basing decisions on a local CPUID instruction. This is not a correct or
appropriate way to construct policy information for other domains.

The overwhelming majority of this logic is redundant with the policy logic in
Xen, but has a habit of becoming stale (e.g. c/s 97e4ebdcd7 resulting in the
CPUID.7[1].eax not being offered to guests even when Xen is happy with the
content).

There are a few subtle side effects which need to remain in place. A
successful call to xc_cpuid_apply_policy() must result in a call to
xc_set_domain_cpu_policy() because that is currently the only way the
ITSC/VMX/SVM bits become reflected in the guests CPUID view. Future cleanup
will remove this side effect.

The topology tweaks are local to libxc. Extend struct cpuid_policy with
enough named fields to express the logic, but keep it identical to before.
Fixing topology representation is another future area of work.

No (expected) change in behaviour.

Jan Beulich df29d03f1d libxc/x86: avoid certain overflows in CPUID APIC ID adjustments
Recent AMD processors may report up to 128 logical processors in CPUID
leaf 1. Doubling this value produces 0 (which OSes sincerely dislike),
as the respective field is only 8 bits wide. Suppress doubling the value
(and its leaf 0x80000008 counterpart) in such a case.

Note that while there's a similar overflow in intel_xc_cpuid_policy(),
that one is being left alone for now.

Note further that while it was considered to suppress the multiplication
by 2 altogether if the host topology already provides at least one bit
of thread ID within APIC IDs, it was decided to avoid more change here
than really needed at this point.

Also zap leaf 4 (and at the same time leaf 2) EDX output for AMD, as it
should have been from the beginning.

Anthony PERARD 582a298b21 libxc: elf_kernel loader: Remove check for shstrtab
This was probably useful as a sanity check when the "__xen_guest"
section were not legacy. But now ELF notes are prefered and
"should live in a PT_NOTE segment" (elfnote.h).

This check is unnecessary as elf_xen_parse() from xen/common/libelf
will do the right thing and look for ELFNOTEs in the different places
in order of preference. elf_xen_parse() will still be able to also
look for the legacy "__xen_guest" section without the check in libxc.

This patch would allow to write a simpler ELF header for an OVMF blob
(which isn't an ELF) and allow it to be loaded as a PVH kernel. The
header only needs to declare two program segments:
- one to tell an ELF loader where to put the blob,
- one for a Xen ELFNOTE.

The ELFNOTE is to comply to the pvh design which wants the
XEN_ELFNOTE_PHYS32_ENTRY to declare a blob as compaptible with the PVH
boot ABI.

Note that without the ELFNOTE, libxc will load an ELF but with
the plain ELF loader, which doesn't check for shstrtab.

Andrew Cooper 2bed1bc241 x86/smt: Support for enabling/disabling SMT at runtime
Currently, a user can in principle combine the output of `xl info -n`, the
APCI tables, and some manual CPUID data to figure out which CPU numbers to
feed into `xen-hptool cpu-offline` to effectively disable SMT at runtime.

A more convenient option is to teach Xen how to perform this action.

Extend XEN_SYSCTL_cpu_hotplug with two new operations. Introduce a new
smt_up_down_helper() which wraps the cpu_{up,down}_helper() helpers with logic
which understands siblings based on their APIC_ID.

Add libxc stubs, and extend xen-hptool with smt-{enable,disable} options.
These are intended to be shorthands for a loop over cpu-{online,offline}.

To simplify the implemention, they will strictly enable/disable secondary
siblings (those with a non-zero thread id). This functionality is intended
for use in production scenarios where debugging options such as `maxcpus=` or
other manual plug/unplug configuration has not been used.

Andrew Cooper c393b64dce tools/libxc: Fix issues with libxc and Xen having different featureset lengths
In almost all cases, Xen and libxc will agree on the featureset length,
because they are built from the same source.

However, there are circumstances (e.g. security hotfixes) where the featureset
gets longer and dom0 will, after installing updates, be running with an old
Xen but new libxc. Despite writing the code with this scenario in mind, there
were some bugs.

First, xen-cpuid's get_featureset() erroneously allocates a buffer based on
Xen's featureset length, but records libxc's length, which may be longer.

In this situation, the hypercall bounce buffer code reads/writes the recorded
length, which is beyond the end of the allocated object, and a later free()
encounters corrupt heap metadata. Fix this by recording the same length that
we allocate.

Secondly, get_cpuid_domain_info() has a related bug when the passed-in
featureset is a different length to libxc's.

A large amount of the libxc cpuid functionality depends on info->featureset
being as long as expected, and it is allocated appropriately. However, in the
case that a shorter external featureset is passed in, the logic to check for
trailing nonzero bits may read off the end of it. Rework the logic to use the
correct upper bound.

In addition, leave a comment next to the fields in struct cpuid_domain_info
explaining the relationship between the various lengths, and how to cope with
different lengths.

Adrian Pop 3e828f882a x86/altp2m: Allow setting the #VE info page for an arbitrary VCPU
In a classic HVI + Xen setup, the introspection engine would monitor
legacy guest page-tables by marking them read-only inside the EPT; this
way any modification explicitly made by the guest or implicitly made by
the CPU page walker would trigger an EPT violation, which would be
forwarded by Xen to the SVA and thus the HVI agent. The HVI agent would
analyse the modification, and act upon it - for example, a virtual page
may be remapped (its guest physical address changed inside the
page-table), in which case the introspection logic would update the
protection accordingly (remove EPT hook on the old gpa, and place a new
EPT hook on the new gpa). In other cases, the modification may be of no
interest to the introspection engine - for example, the accessed/dirty
bits may be cleared by the operating system or the accessed/dirty bits
may be set by the CPU page walker.

In our tests we discovered that the vast majority of guest page-table
modifications fall in the second category (especially on Windows 10 RS4
x64 - more than 95% of ALL the page-table modifications are irrelevant to
us) - they are of no interest to the introspection logic, but they
trigger a very costly EPT violation nonetheless. Therefore, we decided
to make use of the new #VE & VMFUNC features in recent Intel CPUs to
accelerate the guest page-tables monitoring in the following way:

1. Each monitored page-table would be flagged as being convertible
inside the EPT, thus enabling the CPU to deliver a virtualization
exception to he guest instead of generating a traditional EPT
   violation.
2. We inject a small filtering driver inside the protected guest VM,
which would intercept the virtualization exception in order to handle
   guest page-table modifications.
3. We create a dedicated EPT view (altp2m) for the in-guest agent, which
would isolate the agent from the rest of the operating system; the
agent will switch in and out of the protected EPT view via the VMFUNC
instruction placed inside a trampoline page, thus making the agent
immune to malicious code inside the guest.

This way, all the page-table accesses would generate a
virtualization-exception inside the guest instead of a costly EPT
violation; the #VE agent would emulate and analyse the modification, and
decide whether it is relevant for the main introspection logic; if it is
relevant, it would do a VMCALL and notify the introspection engine
about the modification; otherwise, it would resume normal instruction
execution, thus avoiding a very costly VM exit.

In future patches, the structure will be extended with further information,
and this is far cleaner than adding extra parameters.

The python stubs are the only user which passes NULL for the existing config
option (which is actually the arch substructure). Therefore, the #ifdefary
moves to compensate.

For libxl, pass the full config object down into
libxl__arch_domain_{prepare,save}_config(), as there are in practice arch
specific settings in the common part of the structure (flags s3_integrity and
oos_off specifically).

No practical change in behaviour.

Paul Durrant a2d9a6fa1f tools/libxenctrl: use new xenforeignmemory API to seed grant table
A previous patch added support for priv-mapping guest resources directly
(rather than having to foreign-map, which requires P2M modification for

This patch makes use of the new API to seed the guest grant table unless
the underlying infrastructure (i.e. privcmd) doesn't support it, in which
case the old scheme is used.

NOTE: The call to xc_dom_gnttab_hvm_seed() in hvm_build_set_params() was
actually unnecessary, as the grant table has already been seeded
by a prior call to xc_dom_gnttab_init() made by libxl__build_dom().
