The Store_field(result, 16, arch_config) sits inside an #ifdef x86, meaning
that on other architectures the pointer is not filled in. Ocaml code then
falls over a NULL(ish) pointer (really the Val_unit used to initialise
'result') when the layout in the heap doesn't match the type system.
Rearrange alloc_domaininfo() to avoid this. Similarly to
physinfo_arch_caps(), raise an exception if the architecture code hasn't
filled in an appropriate tag. Move the setup of arch_domainconfig to be
common logic.
In order to simplify the addition of other architectures, remove the
arch_config variable (reusing tmp as it's touched exactly once), and rename
x86_arch_config to be arch_config so each architecture can fill in a suitable
one without needing more local variables.

pv_map_ldt_shadow_page() takes the whole guest PTE, adds _PAGE_RW to it, then
installs it into Xen's pagetables. It has had this behaviour ever since LDT
support was added in 2003.
However, it allows the guest to control the software available bits and
cacheability. This happens to be benign right now, but is bad form.
Use only the guest frame, and construct the mapping as regular RW frame, and
notably includes NX. This is how the GDT logic already works.

Under SVM, there are two copies of guest CR2. One is v->arch.hvm.guest_cr[2]
and one is in the VMCB.
Xen doesn't intercept CR2 accesses, so this mostly goes unnoticed; hardware
loads and saves the guest CR2 in the VMCB across VMRUN/VMExit.
For HAP guests (where #PF is not intercepted, and therefore we don't typically
inject #PF either), this causes the guest CR2 value to be lost on migrate. As
migration is cooperative and not done from the #PF handler, this also goes
unnoticed by guests.
It also means that an emulated MOV-from-CR2 reads a stale value.

For INT $N instructions (besides $0x80 for which there is a dedicated fast
path), handling is mostly fault-based because of DPL0 gates in the IDT. This
means that when the guest kernel allows the instruction too, Xen must
increment %rip to the end of the instruction before passing a trap to the
guest kernel.
When an INT $N instruction has a prefix, it's longer than two bytes, and Xen
will deliver the "trap" with %rip pointing into the middle of the instruction.
Introduce a new pv_emulate_sw_interrupt() which uses x86_insn_length() to
determine the instruction length, rather than assuming two.
This is a change in behaviour for PV guests, but the prior behaviour cannot
reasonably be said to be intentional.
This change does not affect the INT $0x80 fastpath. Prefixed INT $N
instructions occur almost exclusively in test code or exploits, and INT $0x80
appears to be the only user-usable interrupt gate in contemporary PV guests.

Introduce amd_init_de_cfg() to be the singular function which writes to
DE_CFG, modelled after the logic we already have for BP_CFG.
While reworking amd_check_zenbleed() into a simple predicate used by
amd_init_de_cfg(), fix the microcode table. The 'good_rev' was specific to an

This can be demonstrated most easily by force loading an old microcode, which

wait_for_state() returns false on encountering LOADING_EXIT. Right now, this
is always transformed into -EBUSY and passed back to callers.
However, control_thread_fn() can move directly to this state in the case of an
early error; it is not an error condition for APs, but the latest write into
stopmachine_data.fn_result wins, causing the real error, -EIO, to get
clobbered with -EBUSY.
Drop all the -EBUSY's, and treat hitting LOADING_EXIT as a success case. This
causes only a single error to be returned through stop_machine_run(), and
preserves the -EIO

TSA affects AMD Fam19h CPUs (Zen3 and 4 microarchitectures).
Three new CPUID bits have been defined. Two (TSA_SQ_NO and TSA_L1_NO)
indicate that the system is unaffected, and must be synthesised by Xen on
unaffected parts to date.
A third new bit indicates that VERW now has a flushing side effect. Xen
must synthesise this bit on affected systems based on microcode version.
As with other VERW-based flushing features, VERW_CLEAR needs OR-ing across
a resource pool, and guests which have seen it can safely migrate in.

In order to mitigate TSA, Xen will need to issue VERW before going idle.
On AMD CPUs, the VERW scrubbing side effects cancel an active MONITOR, causing
the MWAIT to exit without entering an idle state. Therefore the VERW must be
ahead of MONITOR.
Split spec_ctrl_enter_idle() in two and allow the VERW aspect to be handled
separately. While adjusting, update a stale comment concerning MSBDS; more
issues have been mitigated using VERW since it was written.
By moving VERW earlier, it is ahead of the determination of whether to go
idle. We can't move the check on softirq_pending (for correctness reasons),
but we can duplicate it earlier as a best effort attempt to skip the

cpuidle_wakeup_mwait() is a TOCTOU race. The cpumask_and() sampling
cpuidle_mwait_flags can take a arbitrary period of time, and there's no
guarantee that the target CPUs are still in MWAIT when writing into
mwait_wakeup(cpu).
The consequence of the race is that we'll fail to IPI certain targets. Also,
there's no guarantee that mwait_idle_with_hints() will raise a TIMER_SOFTIRQ
on it's way out.
The fundamental bug is that the "in_mwait" variable needs to be in the
monitored line, and not in a separate cpuidle_mwait_flags variable, in order
to do this in a race-free way.
Arranging to fix this while keeping the old implementation is prohibitive, so
strip the current one out in order to implement the new one cleanly. In the
interim, this causes IPIs to be used unconditionally which is safe albeit
suboptimal.

Most of the patch (handling of CPUIDLE_FLAG_IBRS) is fine, but the
adjustements to mwait_idle() are not; spec_ctrl_enter_idle() does more than
just alter MSR_SPEC_CTRL.IBRS.
The only reason this doesn't need an XSA is because the unconditional
spec_ctrl_{enter,exit}_idle() in mwait_idle_with_hints() were left unaltered,
and thus the MWAIT remained properly protected.
There (would have been) two problems. In the ibrs_disable (== deep C) case:
* On entry, VERW and RSB-stuffing are architecturally skipped.
* On exit, there's a branch crossing the WRMSR which reinstates the
speculative safety for indirect branches.
All this change did was double up the expensive operations in the deep C case,
and fail to optimise the intended case.
I have an idea of how to plumb this more nicely, but it requires larger
changes to legacy IBRS handling to not make spec_ctrl_enter_idle() vulnerable
in other ways. In the short term, simply take out the perf hit.

Commit 48d32458bc ("x86, idle: add barriers to CLFLUSH workaround") was
inherited from Linux and added MFENCEs around the AAI65 errata fix.
The SDM now states:
Executions of the CLFLUSH instruction are ordered with respect to each
other and with respect to writes, locked read-modify-write instructions,
and fence instructions[1].
with footnote 1 reading:
Earlier versions of this manual specified that executions of the CLFLUSH
instruction were ordered only by the MFENCE instruction. All processors
implementing the CLFLUSH instruction also order it relative to the other
operations enumerated above.
I.e. the MFENCEs came about because of an incorrect statement in the SDM.
The Spec Update (no longer available on Intel's website) simply says "issue a
CLFLUSH", with no mention of MFENCEs.
As this erratum is specific to Intel, it's fine to remove the the MFENCEs; AMD
CPUs of a similar vintage do sport otherwise-unordered CLFLUSHs.
Move the feature bit into the BUG range (rather than FEATURE), and move the
workaround into monitor() itself.
The erratum check itself must use setup_force_cpu_cap(). It needs activating
if any CPU needs it, not if all of them need it.

For exception recovery in the stubs, the registered address for fixup is the
return address of the CALL entering the stub.
In invoke_stub(), the '.Lret%=:' label is the wrong side of the 'post'
parameter. The 'post' parameter is non-empty in cases where the arithmetic
flags of the operation need recovering.
Split the line to separate 'pre' and 'post', making it more obvious that the
return address label was in the wrong position.
However, in the case that an exception did occur, we want to skip 'post' as
it's logically part of the operation which had already failed. Therefore, add
a new skip label and use that for the exception recovery path.

This is reported as a MISRA R16.3 (missing break) violation, but turns out to
be substantially more complicated than expected.
In commit a8fe4ec532 ("x86emul: support RDRAND/RDSEED"), the switch()
statement had a default case going to cannot_emulate, with both the case 6 and
case 7 labels being fully within #ifdef HAVE_GAS_RD{RAND,SEED}.
Therefore, when the toolchain didn't understand the RDRAND/RDSEED
instructions, attempts to emulate them suffered #UD. (In principle, this is a
problem as there's no interlock to prevent RDRAND/RDSEED being advertised to
the guest, but as instructions with only register encodings, they can only
legitimately be emulated when VM Introspection is in use.)
In commit 58f1bba440 ("x86emul: support RDPID"), case 7 was taken outside of
HAVE_GAS_RDSEED, meaning that emulating an RDSEED instruction no longer hit
the default case when the toolchain was too old.
Instead, it would fall out of the switch statement and be completed normally,
behaving as a NOP to the guest.
Retrofit a "return X86EMUL_UNIMPLEMENTED" in the case that the toolchain
doesn't know the RDRAND instruction, matching how RDRAND work.
Note that this has been fixed differently in Xen 4.21. Commit

The current CI failures turn out to be a latent bug triggered by a narrow set
of properties of the initrd and the host memory map, which CI encountered by
chance.
One step during boot involves constructing directmap mappings for modules.
With some probing at the point of creation, it is observed that there's a 4k
mapping missing towards the end of the initrd.

(XEN) Early fatal page fault at e008:ffff82d04032014c (cr2=ffff8303be000000, ec=0000)
The conditions for this bug appear to be map_pages_to_xen() call with a start
address of exactly 4k beyond a 2M boundary, some number of full 2M pages, then
a tail needing 4k pages.
Anyway, the condition for spotting superpage boundaries in map_pages_to_xen()
is wrong. The IS_ALIGNED() macro expects a power of two for the alignment
argument, and subtracts 1 itself.
Fixing this causes the failing case to now boot.

Xen currently presents APIC_ESR to guests as a simple read/write register.
This is incorrect. The SDM states:
The ESR is a write/read register. Before attempt to read from the ESR,
software should first write to it. (The value written does not affect the
values read subsequently; only zero may be written in x2APIC mode.) This
write clears any previously logged errors and updates the ESR with any
errors detected since the last write to the ESR.
Introduce a new pending_esr field in hvm_hw_lapic.
Update vlapic_error() to accumulate errors here, and extend vlapic_reg_write()
to discard the written value and transfer pending_esr into APIC_ESR. Reads
are still as before.
Importantly, this means that guests no longer destroys the ESR value it's
looking for in the LVTERR handler when following the SDM instructions.

There is a corner case in the VMRUN instruction where its INTR_SHADOW state
leaks into guest state if a VMExit occurs before the VMRUN is complete. An
example of this could be taking #NPF due to event injection.
Xen can safely execute STI anywhere between CLGI and VMRUN, as CLGI blocks
external interrupts too. However, an exception (while fatal) will appear to
be in an irqs-on region (as GIF isn't considered), so position the STI after
the speculation actions but prior to the GPR pops.

The panic() function uses a static buffer to format its arguments into, simply
to emit the result via printk("%s", buf). This buffer is not large enough for
some existing users in Xen. e.g.:

(XEN) Plea****************************************
The remainder of this particular message is 'e check your bootloader.', but
has been inherited by RISC-V from ARM.
It is also pointless double buffering. Implement vprintk() beside printk(),
and use it directly rather than rendering into a local buffer, removing it as
one source of message limitation.
This marginally simplifies panic(), and drops a global used-once buffer.

This is because the condition for init text is wrong. While there's nothing
interesting from that point onwards in start_xen(), it's also wrong for
livepatches too.

aware of init and livepatch regions as well as their lifetimes.

Logic using performance counters needs to look at
MSR_MISC_ENABLE.PERF_AVAILABLE before touching any other resources.
When virtualised under ESX, Xen dies with a #GP fault trying to read
MSR_CORE_PERF_GLOBAL_CTRL.
Factor this logic out into a separate function (it's already too squashed to
the RHS), and insert a check of MSR_MISC_ENABLE.PERF_AVAILABLE.
This also avoids setting X86_FEATURE_ARCH_PERFMON if MSR_MISC_ENABLE says that
PERF is unavailable, although oprofile (the only consumer of this flag)
cross-checks too.
